Topic List and Descriptions

Foundational Workshops

Connected Families offers a variety of workshops geared to inspire and equip parents. We’ve learned over time that the more parents engage with our presenters and materials, the deeper and greater impact our teaching will have in the lives of parents and families. As a starting point, we would recommend one of our two foundational workshops.

What kids learn when they are disciplined will last a lifetime. But well-intentioned parents miss their kids’ hearts during discipline. It happens all the time. Instead of building the wisdom and respect they hope for, parents inadvertently build discouragement and resentment, which drives their kids to misbehave more. But it doesn’t have to be that way! Target audience: Parents of kids ages 2 to 12
Presenters: Jim and Lynne Jackson or Chad Hayenga
Length: From 1 hour to 6 hour conference

In this workshop, you’ll learn a framework of four timeless biblical principles for building strong relationships and anchoring your family in God’s grace and truth. Don’t wait for the storms of life or the strong currents of cultural influence to shipwreck your family. You can become an insightful, proactive parent, despite today’s frantic pace. Parents consistently tell us these four principles stick with them for years and change the course of their family forever.
Target audience: Parents of kids ages 2 to 12
Presenters: Jim and Lynne Jackson or Chad Hayenga
Length: From 1 hour to 3 hours

Additional Workshops

These additional workshops will continue to encourage and challenge your church or organization.  Start the conversation to find out what workshop is right for your community.

Successful companies identify clear values and have a vision statement that guides everything they do. Unfortunately most parents simply randomly reach for the latest parenting method, only to find out its effectiveness is short-lived. A family without vision is like a boat without a rudder: either floating aimlessly or drifting into trouble. This life-changing workshop will clarify what’s really important to you for your unique family and how God is calling you to “set sail” for his purposes.
Target audience: Parents of kids ages 2 to 12
Presenters: Jim and Lynne Jackson or Chad Hayenga
Length: From 2 to 3 hours

The intense emotions of parenting are a “window into the soul.” If you feel stuck in anxious or angry responses to your kids, you can begin to transform the unhelpful thinking driving those patterns. The rich scripture, profound insights and gut-level authenticity of this talk will guide you to “speak the truth in love” to yourself about you and your children. As one mom stated, “Now I can protect my kids from my own baggage.” Even better, now you can watch the grace and truth of the gospel come alive in your closest relationships!
Note: This is the same content as the previous topic Peaceful Mothering.
Target audience: Moms of kids ages 2 to 18
Presenters: Lynne Jackson or Anna Braasch
Length: 1 hour to 1.5 hours
Note: This topic can also be presented to moms and dads together as Peaceful Parenting.

There has never been a time in American history when children had so much but were expected to do so little to get it. Research says narcissism has tripled in three generations. To counteract this trend, you need insight into what’s going on underneath the self-centered attitudes. What are the subtle cultural messages shaping your child’s beliefs? How might your parenting be unintentionally contributing to this sense of entitlement? What you can do to change the momentum? In this workshop you will learn practical Biblical principles to cultivate a family culture of responsibility, gratitude and service.
Target audience: Parents of kids ages 2 to 18
Presenters: Jim and Lynne Jackson, Chad Hayenga or Stacy Bellward
Length: 1 hour to 2 hours

Why Kids Misbehave
Sometimes it may seem like kids’ misbehavior has no rhyme or reason, but in actuality misbehavior is very logical and goal-driven. Escape the cycle of misbehavior and reactions by learning to:
* Understand the motivations behind your kids’ misbehavior.
* Recognize the triggers of false beliefs about misbehavior.
* Develop a plan to skillfully move your child from a negative goal to a positive one.
Target Audience: Parents of kids ages 2 to 18
Presenter: Chad Hayenga
Length: 1 hour to 2 hours

Siblings Workshop

“Now say you’re sorry!” may make a parent feel back in control after a sibling skirmish, but it most likely teaches kids to lie to get out of trouble. By facilitating joyful connection and true reconciliation you can help your children become devoted friends and allies! Learn to prepare your kids with the skills and values they’ll need to become grace-filled spouses, parents, friends, coworkers, and members of the body of Christ.
Target audience: Parents of kids ages 2 to 12
Presenters: Jim and Lynne Jackson or Chad Hayenga
Length: 1 hour to 2 hours

Gaining Cooperation in the Home (1) (1)
Most families are in survival mode much of the time. It takes prayer, thought and commitment to know where your family is headed and how to guide it effectively. Parents will learn to develop a plan to make family life purposeful and even enjoyable by guiding their family into a model of respectful and productive family meeting times. Family meetings, when parents use them well, can be great vehicles for everything from chore plans to platforms for spiritual teaching and growth.
Target audience: Parents of kids ages 4 to 14
Presenter: Chad Hayenga
Length: 1 hour to 2 hours

Misbehaviors and the God-Given Gifts
Buried beneath the surface of children’s selfish or impulsive behavior is the treasure of valuable raw talent, created for God’s purposes. Because it is often used in hurtful ways parents tend to punish the misbehavior without regard for the raw talent. In this workshop you will learn to identify and constructively build on your child’s “gift-gone-awry” so he or she will be motivated to use it for more honoring ways. This grace-filled approach is both solidly biblical, and highly effective in addressing misbehavior as you bring out the best in your kids!
Target audience: Parent of kids ages 2 to 12
Presenter: Jim and Lynne Jackson or Chad Hayenga
Length: 1 hour to 2 hours

Understanding Your Sensitive or Intense Child

Do you ever shake your head and wonder what in the world drives your child to do some of the things he or she does? About 15-20% of children have difficulty processing the sensations and experiences of everyday life. When this is the case, these overwhelmed kids often take out their stress on those around them. Understanding what’s going on in your child’s brain and body gives essential insight about how to help. You’ll learn practical strategies to calm kids’ bodies, focus their brains, and encourage their hearts!

Lynne Jackson worked as a pediatric occupational therapist for 30 years, primarily with children with sensory and behavior challenges. She speaks extensively on parenting, and more specifically on how to help children with sensory processing disorder – at home or in the classroom. As a certified life coach, she has helped hundreds of parents with their challenging kids through individual parent coaching. She and her husband Jim founded Connected Families and have written two books: “How to Grow a Connected Family” and “Discipline that Connects with Your Child’s Heart”. Note: This workshop adapts well as a training for ministry leaders or volunteers working with children.
Target audience: Parents of kids ages 2 to 12
Presenter: Lynne Jackson
Length: 1 ½ to 3 hours (can be condensed to 45 minutes if presented to a moms/MOPS group)

This energized, entertaining workshop is a great follow up workshop to
Discipline that Connects with Your Child’s Heart.  It is helpful for all parents, whether they are “veterans or rookies” in implementing the Discipline that Connects principles. After a brief review of the Connected Families  Parenting Framework, insightful solutions come to life (and laughter) in the form of “improv” skits developed from the hot-button discipline challenges that parents bring to the workshop. A great combination of inspiration, practical learning and fun!
Target audience: Parents of kids ages 4 to 18
Presenters: Jim and Lynne Jackson or Chad Hayenga
Length: 1 hour to 2 hours
