Hi there! I’m Vanessa — a mom of two big-hearted and energetic daughters, a leadership coach, and a facilitator. I love working with families and communities to share the truth and grace of the Connected Families Framework, and God’s heart for all of his children. As a coach, I’m passionate about helping people break cycles, generate more awareness, and approach life with more intention and choice. I work with families of all faiths, and mixed-faith households. Our family is mixed faith, so I have personal experience parenting as a Christian while respecting other belief systems. As a former child therapist and a current stay-at-home mom to a five-year-old and two-year-old twins, I have the unique ability to see the world from the eyes of a child while also understanding the complexities and difficulties of being a parent. I would love to help guide you through the uncomfortable and sometimes painful—yet fundamental—detective work that will help us identify the existing wounds that may be lending a hand to the difficulties you are currently experiencing with your child(ren). During our coaching sessions, we will work to identify these existing wounds, give them over to God, and create a parenting plan that both mirrors the heart of Jesus and is supported by neuroscience. While working as a child therapist, I focused largely on play therapy while equipping parents with tools and skills backed by neuroscience, slowly realizing that the scientific research I was sharing with other parents perfectly aligns with the word of God. While I wholeheartedly believe that play therapy can be extremely beneficial for many kiddos, I witnessed the greatest changes in the kiddos whose parents were able to take the scientific research and tools I was providing them with and apply them consistently at home. For many years I have studied and worked largely from an attachment lens in which I instinctively incorporate into my coaching sessions. My prayer is that you will gain the ability to cultivate meaningful relationship(s) with the child(ren) God has entrusted you with and begin to enjoy the sweet years you have with them—even in the midst of the chaos. Homeschooling our children is such a blessing, but it can also be such an intense experience when we face challenges. As a Charlotte Mason home educator, I truly believed in the personhood of my kiddos, but I felt so in-over-my-head with our sensitive and intense nature, ADHD tendencies and anxiety that wrapped around all of it. Parent Coaching through Connected Families became the catalyst for God’s healing and a deeper understanding of the personhood of my entire family. Our challenges turned into strengths. The trajectory of our home was forever changed! This is the hope and toolset that I love to share with others. Now, as a Parent Coach, I get to walk alongside other families and watch the Framework grow in them. I’ve seen first hand how this maturing sense of peace, connection, wisdom, and resiliency creates space for the gospel to be lived out in the home and homeschool. I am a pediatric nurse practitioner and mom of four adolescents through birth and adoption with nearly a decade of experience using Connected Families resources. Trained in SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions), I love empowering parents with a confident plan to support their children in overcoming anxiety. I have expertise in neuroscience and child development, which I love to incorporate into help you understand your child’s needs and behaviors. Faith is still foremost, however, so the ultimate hope I hold is in God’s faithfulness to guide you in all the good work he has prepared for you and your family. I have been using the Connected Families Framework for a decade in my home and nursing profession, growing in navigating these powerful questions through all kinds of ages, stages, and challenges. I found Connected Families at a time of desperation with my children, and I received the tools, instruction, and hope to forge a new path with them. After taking the DTC online course and receiving one-on-one coaching, there was an amazing trajectory shift in our family. I am a wife and mother of three young adults, each of which is so different than the next! It is my desire to come alongside families that are looking for a better way to parent and help them make lasting changes. I want to extend the same hope that I received to those who are just starting the parenting journey as well as to those who, like me, found themselves in a broken place. For many years, we pursued help for our sensitive and intense child without success. By the teen years, our family was spiraling out of control. We sent our child to a therapeutic boarding school, but it didn’t produce the promised change in our family. It wasn’t until we found Connected Families and began to change the way we were parenting that we experienced a significant breakthrough. Partnering with a Connected Families coach and learning to utilize the parenting framework brought hope and changed the trajectory of our family. I have a passion for working with parents of young children so that they might avoid the pitfalls we made in our parenting journey. I also have a heart for working with parents of pre-teens and teens so that they know there is always hope for a restored relationship and an opportunity to change the future. The simple and effective teaching of Connected Families helps me recognize what’s really going on in me that drives my reactions to my children, helps me have compassion for what is going on in my children, and provides practical tools to guide them with love and connection that builds wisdom and responsibility. Before Connected Families, I was reading so much about the latest brain research and didn’t really have the skills to apply it to my Christian parenting. When I learned how Connected Families incorporates the latest brain science, therapeutic research, and Biblical truth into a beautiful, grace-filled plan, I knew we were onto something amazing. Learning to parent through the framework has been a journey of spiritual formation for me. I have learned to see how God parents me with patience, kindness, and long-suffering and always for my good. Many parents feel overwhelmed and stuck in patterns that aren’t working. I help them confidently implement a grace-filled parenting strategy so they can relax and enjoy their family. My greatest joy is seeing parents who have struggled in their relationship with their kids experience HOPE because of the new skills, perspectives, and mindset they have gained through coaching in one-on-one, small group, and large group meetings. I am a mom of two young adult children and “like a mom” to two young adults who have experienced extensive developmental trauma. I have had many ups and downs as a parent. I wish I had learned the Connected Families framework when my kids were young- it would have made parenting easier and my connection with my kids stronger. But I am thankful that today I enjoy connected, although not perfect, relationships with my kids. In addition to being a parent, I am a licensed Family and Early Childhood Educator with more than 25 years of experience working with young children and their parents. I have also supported and trained teachers both in the US and in Haiti. And I’ve recently taught the Connected Families framework to teachers at a school in Haiti and to teachers at a Minnesota early childhood conference. Because of my education and experiences, I especially enjoy encouraging and supporting parents of young children, parents of young adult children, parents of kids from hard places, and teachers. I am a wife, a mom of two strong-willed and doubly gifted teenage girls, and have worked in Kids Ministry for over 15 years. I know that kids are a gift from God. I also know that their behaviors can be challenging and can lead to parent reactions that we don’t intend. I have been there! When I was introduced to Connected Families, I felt like I finally had language, tools, and hope to help me parent well and lead ministry well.
