What to Do When Kids Go Crazy? Do a Do-Over!
“I call the window seat!”
“Nu-uhhh, it’s MY turn!”
“No way!”
“OW! Mom, she hit me!”
Sometimes it can seem like the simplest interactions are the ones that explode out of nowhere. Getting out the door to school, getting in the car to go somewhere, getting ready for bed — when it comes to transition time, you can just feel your blood pressure begin to rise.
So what do you do when an interaction with kids goes haywire? Do a do-over!
Apply It Now:
- Think of a frequent transition or interaction where things might tend to explode in your house.
- Talk with your kids — perhaps at a family meeting — about how you’d all like that situation (e.g. bedtime, school, etc.) to go.
- When things go south, stop, take a deep breath, and say, “Are we liking how this is going? You know what everyone? Let’s do a do-over!” (Be sure to own any things YOU need to do-over!)
- Celebrate the things that went better the second time.
- Let us know how it goes!
